THE ROYAL ARCTIC INSTITUTE / FLUX IN A CONSTANT STATE / JIMROSCH
SATURDAY, 5/24 @ 8P
THE ROYAL ARCTIC INSTITUTE: The Royal Arctic Institute is an instrumental, post-punk, cinematic jazz quintet. Members John Leon (guitar), and Lyle Hysen (drums) combine 50+ years of experience (Das Damen, Roky Erickson’s backing band, & more). The quintet is rounded out by David Motamed (bass), Lynn Wright (guitar), and Carl Baggaley (keyboard). The group self-describe their music as “post-everything."
FLUX IN A CONSTANT STATE: (No) Nü Age improvisations//bast(u)rd brainchild of Matt Hurley.
JIMROSCH: He comes out of Westfield secure in the knowledge that his songs are valid, profound, melodic, entertaining and of substance. His musical fluidity comes from his trio but also from somewhere down deep…with literate narratives delivered in a guitar-centric universe where Tom Verlaine and Al Green vie for supremacy within his soul. This is adult fare. “Leave The Light On” is about parenting. “Hauling” captures the feel of the long-distance trucker. He admits he’s “not broken, just broke” in “Raise The Dead.” Serious singer-songwriter devotees would do themselves a favor by meeting jimrosch, otherwise known as Jim Scheiner.

FRIDAY, 4/19 @ 8P
A night of Kleztronica Yiddish Techno.
Chaia (Kaia Berman Peters): is a DJ, accordionist, and vocalist. Raised in the Jewish klezmer tradition, she makes electronic music that bridges klezmer with techno and house music. Chaia performs as a trio with Rachel Leader (fiddle) and Maddie Russell (bass).
Sam Day Harmet: is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, producer, and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. A musician of diverse tastes, Sam's projects range from deconstructive folk and jazz, to free improvisation, to left field electronic music, to Soundpainting and beyond. He has also written extensively in theater settings often composing material that blurs the lines between far flung styles and disciplines. His work has been called "wildly fresh" by Jazziz Magazine and "chic and eccentric" by The New York Times.

FRIDAY, 4/12 @ 8P
YAWNMOWER: YM is a fuzzed out, doom pop outfit from Asbury Park, NJ, on the Mint 400 Records label.
this HOLY rodeo!: this HOLY rodeo! is a group of very well-adjusted young gentlemen creating performance art music in New York City. Centered around four city-slicking snake oil salesmen in Mario Marques, Chris Harth, Sami Habib, and Gaetano Lardieri, the rodeo exists in many permutations and features a rotating cast of characters, real and fictional. Their mutli-faceted live shows have been described by Beyond the Stage magazine as “...electric and eccentric…”. Each show varies wildly in structure and method, some involving chapter-like title cards and paranormal possessions, others with pseudo-sermons and fanatical audience interplay.
STAREAWAY: Stare Away, hailing from New Jersey, craft a distinctive sonic identity, skillfully blending classic punk with electronic undertones. Their sound, a refreshing synthesis of influences, draws significantly from the rich tapestry of the late 70s and 80s music scene. By channeling elements from pioneers like The Sound and The Cure, they pay homage to the brooding, emotive textures of post-punk. Meanwhile, the influence of John Maus and Current Joys injects a modern twist, infusing their music with a blend of lo-fi electronic and indie-rock sensibilities.

MONDAY, 3/11 @ 8P + ACOUSTIC JAM
SOFIA CAMPOAMOR: Born in Washington, DC, Sofía Campoamor first started writing songs to make school projects more fun. This lighthearted approach to academics led her to study music at Yale University, where she composed everything from a cappella arrangements to podcast theme songs, and performed around the world as the first woman member of the Whiffenpoofs. Campoamor now writes, records, and performs original indie folk in Brooklyn, and sings as a cantor and section leader with the Oratory Choir of St. Boniface. She facilitates collaborative songwriting at Gaia Music Collective and Hear Your Song. Her debut album "if you knew, i couldn't tell" blends dreamy acoustic soundscapes with biting vulnerability in tales of love, longing, and friendship. For more, check out her website. We’re so excited to have her back at P237!
LIZZY HILLIARD: Lizzy is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter trying to figure it out in New York City. She’s been making music for as long as she can remember and in recent years has been developing a folkier, softer sound, writing lyrics with evocative imagery, whimsy, and a twinge of fantasy. Lizzy self-releases all her own material and, with her newest release ‘growth vol. 3,’ adds producing and engineering to her growing list of skills. She grew up in Abington, Pennsylvania and she’s always searching for things to write new songs about (careful, you might be next!) Find more about Lizzy at lizzyhilliard.com or on her tiktok/instagram at @lizzy.hilliard :)
KATHERINE PATERSON: Katherine Paterson is an indie-folk singer/songwriter based in McKinney, TX. She writes music to keep you company. Paterson first began writing songs as gifts for far-flung companions. This evolved into a practice of using writing as a way to navigate life’s myriad moments–especially the more difficult ones. A homing beacon of sorts, Paterson’s debut album, Wake, invites you to come find her among past selves, loved ones, grief, dreams, and plants. Her intimate storytelling is a direct result of her admiration for the songwriting craft of luminaries like Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile. Check out www.katherinepatersonmusic.com for more!
Following the show, we'll be hosting our regular Monday night jam session--
This time it's acoustic!

VALENDINA: Valendina is an alternative rock band based right outside of Philadelphia. The members of the band consist of Karina Patricelli on vocals and bass, Chase Sakers on guitar and vocals, Tommy Kenish on guitar, and Shane Owen on drums and vocals.
A JACK POWERS COLLABORATION.
TUESDAY, 2/6 @ 8P
SAM ZALTA: Since 2016, Zalta has played guitar and keyboards for Bambara in their live configuration, touring the world with the Brooklyn-via-Atlanta rising outfit. Zalta has been writing and recording since his teens under different aliases, sharing them only with close friends and family, and performing live scarcely in and around New York. Now he’s ready to go public and make a mark with his own sound.
MONOGRAMS: Monograms is the alias of Brooklyn, NYC's Ian Jacobs, who communicates tones with dynamics and velocity. Pointillism lyrics, lucid beats and angular melodies create a driving backdrop of underground and popular music across an eclectic spectrum; From post-punk to gritty pop, angular psych to new-wave, Monograms' sonic coding points at the heyday of college radio, as well as contemporaries that push and pull from similar threads.
A PARALLAX VIEW: Experimental rock from Central New Jersey.
BROOKE PRIDEMORE: Brook Pridemore (born in 1979 in Detroit, Michigan, United States) is a New York City–based songwriter, performer, and lead vocalist. Their early work is affiliated with the antifolk movement. They've released five albums on the Bronx-based record label Crafty Records, and was responsible for co-producing the much acclaimed Anticomp Folkilation album which has since become an underground cult hit. Having lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for years doing backyard shows and working dead-end jobs to pay for musical endeavors, Brook was known to sing about the things friends did, or that they saw while hanging out downtown, just for something to do.
SHINNY ALBERT & THE CARNIES: I’m Shinny Albert and I’m a singer/songwriter/musician from New Jersey. I started playing and writing music with Bearing Obscurity . Even though I still wanted to continue my work with the band, I decided that I wanted to write music that was more personal to me and told my story and who I was and experiment with new genres and sounds. So I decided to take an old childhood nickname for my stage name and Shinny Albert came to be. I work very closely with my producer And great friend, AC Borress , to make sure that everything I put out is great! I hope you enjoy my music and my ideas. - Shinny
Thursday, 12/7 @ 8:30p
DEAD GOWNS: Dead Gowns is the songwriting project of Geneviève Beaudoin. Her latest collection, the How EP, is a confident declaration of self-acceptance. Written in January 2021, during a period of personal and professional flux, Beaudoin found herself taking stock of what to hold onto. Having been immersed in the recording process of a separate Dead Gowns full length, these songs rose to the surface out of necessity and quickly took on a life of their own.
TULA VERA: We are SO STOKED to have Tula Vera back on our stage! The dinner leftovers of 60’s rock with some modern-day spooky blues, Tula Vera’s sound shines through. Tula Vera is a four-piece rock band based out of North Jersey/New York. Playing shows all over, including but not limited to New Brunswick basement shows, clubs in New York, and shows in Philadelphia. The band formed in 2015 from the DIY musical depths of New Jersey by songwriters Claire Parcells and Dylan Drummond. Bassist Joe Jansen and Drummer Margaret Marino joined the group in 2016, the same year their debut self-titled album was released. This record solidified the genre-bending 21st-century rock vibe that is Tula Vera’s signature sound. Tula Vera just released their Sophomore full-length LP “Again and Again…”
H.PRUZ: Again, there is the stunning debut EP by Brooklyn singer-songwriter h. pruz (full name Hannah Pruzinsky). It’s a quiet, powerful record, leaving its mark not with force but with gentle turns of melody and cutting lyrics delivered softly, easily. It’s a front porch with wind chimes sounding; it’s a nap on the couch on a summer afternoon; it’s a pair of dirty hands in compost, letting dead things turn into something richer, kinder. It’s fuzzy memories overlaid on each other to form the present.
The songs took shape as Pruzinsky spent time away from their home city in more rural settings — spending time in the Carolinas, visiting her Pennsylvania hometown, hiking excursions upstate. Oftentimes their voice barely breaks a whisper, as if deferring to the quiet of the trees. Though the EP was recorded in their New York apartment, while working as a medical practitioner in two Brooklyn ERs during a pandemic, the country had sunk into the songs. References to forest-bathing and hiking, to rough back roads and gravel, to meadows and hills, are peppered into their lyrics.
THIS HOLY RODEO: As they put it in their own words - “I will speak evil to thee - contort my heart and body, and let violence move through me, unfettered, untethered, uncontrollably, inconsolably,” this HOLY rodeo! is a group of very well-adjusted young gentlemen creating performance art music in New York City. Their music has been described as “...What the fuck?...the most unique tracks we’ve heard all year,” by Havoc Underground, and “Bursting with creative rock flair…” by Obscure Sound. It has also been described by many drunk and coked out fans as “sick” and “wow!” respectively.

A classic quest with a unique sci-fi twist, “Worlds Collide” is an apt name for this genre-bending adventure — but the collisions certainly do not stop there.
This theatrical collaboration represents not only Prototype's intro to the gaming world and NJ-based gaming company Union City Heroes’ inaugurative DIY artspace experience, but also quite possibly the first time the world has seen anything quite like this epic multi-session fantasy adventure in a theater-style game within an immersive art space.
This isn’t your uncle’s basement DnD game: Worlds Collide has many awesome extra features including a full original soundtrack plus an on-stage theatrical playthrough with an in-person interactive audience — all live-streamed with multi-camera setup!
If the original soundtrack — written by the atmospheric space-centric metal band Solfar — didn’t already say enough about the depths of curation involved, step into the enchanted medieval world of Honchak for a moment:
There you’ll join a one-of-a-kind adventure with a crash-landed starman through an enchanted land of Dogfolk. Just when you think you're safe from the vile Czartanate’s nefarious plots and horde of insectoid foot soldiers, the Fleze, you’ll have to smite the evil Crow Knight before he steals your soul and makes you do his bidding as a malevolent spy crow.
The cast of characters and settings run deep, with each having its own unique musical score! As an audience member, you’ll experience it all with full immersive sound/lighting and have a chance to influence decisions and even get a seat at the table!
$10 at the door, or pay what you can.

In 2020, we built a space in Silk City to harness power from community and store it in a garment warehouse with big glass windows – a lightning bolt featuring prominently in our logo.
And in 2023, on the final day of September, we are proud to bring you Protopalooza 3: Lightning in a Bottle to celebrate three years of continuous community current.
If you have performed on our stage, danced in our living room, played chess in our garden, laughed in our kitchen….please show us some electrifying love as we continue our journey of art making and community building. It’s fun, tough work and we can’t do it without you!
Our third birthday will feature the band Aidan Jack Finnecy and DJ Bizz Nice spinning vibes 'til late night. Come hear some great music, play some games, dance the night away, and harness all of our community energy.
Grab those tix and stick around for the long haul as we relish not just some hot dogs, but the growth of our space.

FRIDAY 8/18 @ 8P
REESE VAN RIPER: We are excited to have "Papa Reese" back on our stage! Based out of New Jersey, Reese Van Riper have released over 10 albums and have over 100 songs available for streaming and purchase on all major platforms. Their raw, gritty and eerie rock sound has earned them their own classification known as “Jersey Swamp Rock”. According to Aquarian Magazine, "when I listen to their music, I picture living in a shack near the swamp, sitting in front of a fireplace with a shotgun in my hand and eating squirrel, while I listened to the music of Reese Van Riper on a phonograph. Their music is dark and certainly swampy.″ A terrific live band to boot their lead singer Papa Reese himself, “commands the stage standing at a towering 6’7″, and his band feeds off his energy live."
J HACHA DE ZOLA: J Hacha De Zola (“A wild man in the vein of such fire breathing artists like Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Captain Beefheart.” – PASTE) is a Jersey City, NJ-based “Urban Junkyard” artist who, over the course of several LPs, EPs, and iconoclastic covers of pop songs, has established himself as a singular musical force, despite his “difficult” sound. Hacha De Zola’s albums, the last one produced by legendary engineer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile), are created using the artist’s personally developed “Reductive Synthesis” method of “shooting the arrow first, and then painting the target around it.” Hacha De Zola’s live shows are similarly imaginative and unpredictable (fire breathing not guaranteed!).
SKEETER DE MILO: Skeeter de Milo is a NYC-based cosmic sludge band formed in 2019 by Matt Belen, Peter Carlovich, and Winsloe Fideler. They released their first self-titled full-length record in May 2020. Belen's highly original riffing and blazing guitar solos combined with the punchy, almost krautrock-esque rhythms of Carlovich, and the complex grooving bass lines by Fideler create a unique sound in the NYC scene that melds the crushing psychedelia of stoner and doom metal with the driving, bombastic sound of hardcore punk.
